An unpaid family Carer is anyone who, without payment, provides help and support to somebody who could not manage without their help.
Carers come from all walks of life. They can be any age. They can be male or female. They can be from any culture or background. They can be caring for a relative, a partner, a child, a friend or a neighbour.
The person they look after may be ill or elderly and frail. They may be physically disabled or have mental health issues; or they may suffer from an addiction.
Anyone can become a Carer (nearly 1 in 10 of us are). And although every Carer is different, many feel they are doing what anyone else would in the same situation; looking after their mother, son, or best friend and just getting on with it.
But Carers themselves need support, too.
In Essex there are over 145,000 Carers (180,000 if you include Southend and Thurrock). That’s 180,00 reasons for us to care.
